In the vegetable garden in the fall

The time for the last harvest has come for many fruits and vegetables. If there is a surplus, you will have to get busy in the kitchen to make jams, compotes, sauces, jars ... or freeze everything! Root vegetables and leafy vegetables can remain in the ground, but care should be taken to store pears, apples, potatoes and cucurbits in a frost-free, cool and dry place.

Take advantage of the beds released in the vegetable garden to aerate the soil using an organic fork, add manure or compost, then sow green manure or mulch. The idea is not to leave the earth bare to avoid it being washed away by the rains and to limit the growth of weeds.

If you want to enjoy the vegetables from the garden in winter, now is the time to sow winter salads, turnips, cabbage, leeks ... and to plant them strawberries for next summer.

Major cleaning operation on the lawn, in the flower beds and the paths! Throughout the fall, you will need to pick up the dead leaves, to be recycled in the compost or in the form of mulch. Fall is also an opportunity to take out the tools to prune trees, shrubs and hedges. Once crushed, branches and green waste can be used as mulch or enrich the compost.

In the massifs, autumn is the right season for prune your roses and plant new ones. This is also the time to plant spring bulbs and sow biennials and some annuals such as thoughts, the poppies and nigella.

Before the first winter cold, you will have to enter or protect your planters and pots which fear frost. Pelargoniums and summer bulbs can be stored in the cellar. Plants of Mediterranean or exotic origin (bougainvillea, oleander, Olivier, citrus, cacti, etc.) will spend the winter in a frost-free room equipped with a window.

In the orchard in the fall

Besides harvesting the fruit and pruning the trees, fall is the season for planting fruit trees. Proceed in November, to Saint Catherine, where as the saying goes “every tree takes root”. Plant your bare root trees in a wide hole in which you have placed a stake. Spread the roots with praline, cover with soil, water to avoid air bubbles and straw. The graft point should be at ground level.

If your trees have been diseased, you can do preventive treatment with Bordeaux mixture just after their leaves have fallen. You will repeat the application in the spring, before the first buds appear.
