Origin of rubber

Hevea brasiliensis is a plant of Amazonian origin.

In the XIXe century, the exploitation and cultivation of rubber trees has developed rapidly due to strong industrial demand.

Brazil was the main supplier of Rubber Latex, which was harvested at the time mainly from natural forests.

The wealth created in Manaus (Brazil) thanks to the rubber boom and its impact on the city's development in the early 20th centurye century have become legendary.

Faced with growing demand, large forest plantations have been created.

Word Rubber means the weeping tree and the word Latex in "Ancient Greek" means liquor.

L’hevea can reach 30 m high for 1 meter of circumference. It consists of laticiferous tissues, from which the latex is extracted.

Its bark is a gray green and its leaves are thin and elongated, they drop every year.

Cultivation of rubber trees for latex

Before a tree is productive, it is necessary to wait 7 to 8 years before even thinking of harvesting the rubber tree.

Precise measurements are made to control the maturity of the tree. Therefore, the tree is measured and checked to make sure it can be harvested.

One of the main measurements is the circumference of the tree. The circumference of the rubber tree must be 50 cm minimum from 1 meter measured at the root of the tree, the ground.

Contrary to what is common to think what is extracted from the Hévéa tree is not a sap or even resin, but what is called Latex which appears as a rather viscous substance , like thick milk.

Latex actually contains only 35% rubber, the rest being water.

The latex comes from the laticiferous cells of the rubber tree, which are found in its bark and function as a chain of cells.

Latex has the function of protect the tree against parasites, bacteria and any type of impurity. This is why after processing, latex retains its antibacterial properties naturally and without additives.

For harvest the latex, a slight incision is made in the bark of the tree. This incision is made from top to bottom and half a centimeter deep.

Very quickly, the latex flows along the incision and is harvested in small containers. Historically, this harvest was done in split coconuts. After a few hours, you should know that the latex coagulates.

It is practiced a break after this first harvest before practicing a new bleeding. In fact, it takes about 4 days for the laticiferous tissues to secrete latex again.

Every year to preserve the tree; the bleeding changes direction. This work-study program will last for a minimum of 11 years. However, some trees produce latex for over 30 years.

The tree will not be bled during the rains and the dry period, when the tree loses its leaves.

Natural rubber has some must-have properties that elastomers made from petroleum cannot match.

Natural rubber has certain properties that synthetic does not.

Hévéa Milk processing steps:

■ Filtration, centrifugation, vulcanization, rinsing and drying.

Hevea milk is harvested by hand, then poured into large vats where it is filtered to purify it particles. This step is crucial.

It is then centrifuged, emulsified with water and air, then slowly heated and vulcanized to 120 ° in the molds, a process where rubber changes from liquid to solid.

Rinsing and then drying the natural latex cores is an important step in order to stabilize the material.
