The olive tree, a tree full of assets

Easy to cultivate, in the ground south of the Loire or in a large pot to the north, the olive tree measures 1 to 3 m for small trees (ideal for balconies and terraces) and 3 to 20 m for larger ones. big.

- It is rustic and does not fear temperatures that can go down to -5 °, even -15 if the cold is dry.

The planting is done in spring, on a mound to facilitate drainage, in soil with the addition of sand and pebbles. Even if it grows slowly, plan for a place or container large enough for the roots to be comfortable.
Choose a potting soil for citrus fruits and Mediterranean plants, without the need for fertilizer since it is a tree that grows on poor soil and stake it during the first years, especially if it is grown on a stem.
Once rooted, the main thing will be to ensure that your foot is never soggy, because the diseases that are fatal to it are rot: verticillium wilt, sooty mold, "Peacock eye" ...
To avoid them, repeat that the olive tree is a drought tree and specify that an application of Bordeaux mixture can help treat or prevent these diseases. Cover its base with natural mulch and space the waterings, one per week in summer and only a little frost in winter. Note that, for once, tap water is allowed and even recommended because the olive tree likes limestone soils!
