Dill: from cultivation to harvest

Growing dill is easy and low maintenance for a summer harvest.

Sowing, planting dill

Dill is an easy, undemanding plant that will keep you reaping its delicious leaves until late in the year.

  • Dill likes the sun and rather sheltered from the wind.
  • She likes light, well-drained soils, if your soil is too compact, don't hesitate to lighten it with sand and potting soil.
  • Enrich your soil at planting with compost or an amendment based on manure and algae.

Place it so that it does not give too much shade to the other aromatic plants you are growing as it grows to three feet in height.

Dill seedlings:

  • The sowing of dill is done in spring, from April and until beginning of summer.
  • The staggering of the sowing allows the harvest to be spread over time
  • Prefer a sowing in place that you will do in line and thin out to about 8 cm as soon as the first leaves appear.

Caring for dill

Maintenance is reduced to the strict minimum, i.e. a watering when the land is dry

  • Lack of water can cause dill to go to seed quickly so don't let the soil dry out too long

Cut the leaves just before flowering. These are the ones we use for flavor salads, sauces and marinades.

You can also eat the small seeds that appear at the end of summer to flavor your dishes or mix them with fleur de sel.

Good associations with dill

Dill LOVE the presence of :

Broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cucumber, pickle, coriander, lettuce, turnip, onion and tomato.

Dill REDOUTE the presence of :

Absinthe, carrot, fennel, parsnip, parsley.

Good to know about dill

Slightly aniseed and very delicate to the taste, the dill also has the advantage of being cultivate very easily.

Whether fresh or dried, it works well with most seasonings, cream cheeses, marinades of fish and shellfish, as well as barbecuing fish.

Its leaves are thin and strongly resemble those of fennel and its yellow flowers provide delicious seeds in late summer.

If you only grow Anethum graveolens, you can find different interesting varieties: "Dukat", "Fernleaf", "Hera", "Mammoth" or even "Tetra",

If you want to cultivatepotted dill, favor "Fernleaf" which is a dwarf variety not exceeding 40 cm in height.

Smart tip about dill

Dill can stand the sun and heat. It can therefore be installed in well exposed places.
